Ysgol Llangoed School Workshop

with poet Sian Northey
and artist Elen Williams
on the 22nd of May, 2023

The workshop was generously supported by the Cwlwm Seiriol project.

Taking inspiration from the blooming hedgerows and natural areas in the grounds of the school, poet Sian Northey and artist Elen Williams led the students of Ysgol Gynradd Llangoed to create poems and artworks inspired by the natural world.

The younger age groups enjoyed working together, creating six different collaborative drawings, or ‘gardens’ as they called them. The children visited each garden, adding their own flower and leaf drawings. They worked together on poems inspired by their experience.

The older students collected samples during their nature walk, bringing their collections into the classroom for close observation. They were very innovative in their descriptions of the plants and their ecosystems and enjoyed the new experience of combining poetry and drawing.

This workshop was inspired by the works and lives of the Massey Sisters, Gwenddolen and Edith Massey, botanical illustrators who lived in Cornelyn Manor in Llangoed during the late 19th Century.
